The 5thgeneration of mobile communications (5G NR) is a new air interface meant to address the growing demand for broadband, flexible and efficient mobile communications.

The main features related to 5G NR come from beamforming, carrier aggregation and wide-band measurements. These represent also a major technological challenge, as the number of measurements needed for a comprehensive assessment may grow exponentially. The technologies which are best suited to address these new challenges are those based on full vector field measurements.

For our purposes, 5G NR can be split into two main parts, above and below 6 GHz, depending on the relevant metric used for exposure assessment (SAR below 6 GHz, Power Density above).

At ART-Fi we are evolving our product portfolio to cope with the requirements from each of the two.

5G < 6GHz

5G NR will initially available at frequencies below 6 GHz, as an evolution of 4G LTE and LTE-Advanced, as per IEC CDV 62209-3. The technical core of this evolution is the extensive use of MIMO for beamforming evaluation and Carrier Aggregation (CA) to increase efficiency in spectrum usage.

ART-MAN is the natural architecture to assess 5G below 6 GHz, thanks to its unique full vector field measurement technology.

  • Is the only technical solution which allows to rigorously measure CA and Simultaneous Transmission testing thanks to its frequency selectiveness
  • Reduces by at least a factor 40 the measurement time needed for a single scan, with respect to the state of the art single probes systems
  • Reduces by a factor 6 the total amount of measurements needed for beamforming evaluation, with respect to the state of the art pseudo-vector array systems.

The 5G below 6GHz will be covered by a dedicated package to be installed on ART-MAN: the entry level of this package will consists on an update to the Sarlab software, while for advanced top-notch performance a hardware update will be provided as well.

5G mm-Waves

For frequencies above 6 GHz, physical constraints impose to change the metric of interest for exposure limits, from specific absorption rate (SAR) to surface-averaged power density (PD), as per the IEEE STD.1720-2012 and the IEC TR 63170:2018 (technical report).

Based on ART-Fi’s know-how and patented technology, an innovative vector-probe system is provided. Thanks to its full vector E-field measurements, our mmWaves solution allows to:

  • Rigorously measure CA and Simultaneous Transmission testing, thanks to its frequency selectiveness
  • Rigorously measure ultra-wide band signal, up to 400MHz bandwidth
  • Reduce by a factor 6 the total amount of measurements needed for beamforming evaluation, with respect to the state of the art pseudo-vector probe systems.

The mm-waves solution will be provided with novel algorithms for:

  • Calculation of magnetic (H-) field and hence power density (PD) from measured vector electric (E-) field.
  • Evaluation distance as close as 2mm from the DUT
  • Visualization of amplitude and phase of the E-field and of the power density, both local and spatially averaged
